Yorkshire in Bloom 2008

We are Yorkshire's Premier Double Award Winning Lavender Farm, Gardens and Herb Nursery set in a spectacular hillside farm of nearly 60 acres, within the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  We have hundreds of different lavender and herbs for sale, EJ's Tea Room/Restaurant to enjoy delicious food, a Gift Shop brimming with lavender and herb products, a parkland walk and many new garden design features.  Our panoramic view over the Vale of York is said to be one of the best in Yorkshire!

It is now fifteen years since we acquired nearly 60 acres of south-facing farmland, just outside Terrington.  As with many things in life, it wasn't what our family had planned for and was prompted by the death of my wife Lynne, fourteen years ago from cancer.  Yorkshire Lavender became a family project for myself and our children Sam and Emma Jane, then aged only 5 and 3.Yorkshire Lavender visitors

It certainly has been a 'voyage of discovery' for us all and I'm sure the beauty and therapeutic nature of lavender has played its part.  From our early beginnings of a few experiemental rows, Yorkshire Lavender and Howardian Herbs now has hundreds of different lavender and herb varieties to admire around the farm and to buy in our plant nursery.  In summer, the lavender with its stunning array of different colours, from white through a complete range of blues, lilacs to magnificent deep purples, along with the range of distinct and heady scents, is a wonderful experience, 'Herbs for all reasons and herbs for all seasons'.

Lavender PlantsOur Sensory Garden is a delight for anyone to sit and enjoy, but particularly appealing for visually impaired visitors.  Herbs, flowers and grasses have been selected for their scent, texture and even the noise they make in the breeze.  Our 'Purple Patch', incorporating lavenders, herbs and other flowering plants and shrubs, demonstrates the beautiful and changing shades resulting from a single colour planting scheme.  The Dry Garden, with its natural pathways leading through an usual collection of Mediterranean and native dry-loving plants.  Come and see our unique Lavender Maze (no cheating!), Lavender 'White Rose' of Yorkshire, Themed Herb Gardens and our Natural Wild Flower Grassland Meadow.  Other recent additions have been a Bog Garden and The Wibbly Wobbly Way.

Wander in the parkland, sit and admire the fabulous views and watch the fallow deer, highland cattle and pet lambs nearby.

The pathways from the Visitor Centre leading to the Plant Sales area have been designed to be wheelchair accessible and the more sloping areas can be enjoyed from one of the many vantage points throughout the farm.

We probably have the largest selection of lavender and herb plants for sale in the North of England together with Border Perennials, Biennials, Annuals, Grasses, Alpines and Wildflowers.

Over the years many famous celebrities have visited us and we were delighted to have been featured on both BBC and ITV programmes including recently 'Castle in the Country' in which James Martin used our 'Lavender Honey' to make two exciting recipes we have also featured on the front page of the Saturday Telegraph Gardening Supplement, as well as The Lady Magazine, Dalesman, Yorkshire Evening Press and BBC Radio York and Leeds.  We're tremendously proud of what we've been able to achieve with huge help over the years from our work colleagues (now numbering nearly 30!) and of course our visitors.

For the second year running we are the GOLD WINNER OF ''VISITOR ATTRACTION' Category in Yorkshire in Bloom 2008 - The judges were particularly impressed with the high standard of horiticulture throughout and the different coloured varieties of lavender surrounded by grasses, herbs and perennials.  They added, that features designed for visitor interest make this a beautiful visitor attraction.

One of our great pleasures has been tracing the history of the lavender plant and how it has been used for centuries for its healing and antiseptic properties.  Herbalists believed that most ailments could be helped by the use of lavender, often steeped in hot water.  The plant's name itself is testimony to this - the name Lavandula comes from the Latin 'lavare' to wash.

A resurgent interest in natural remedies has deservedly revived lavender's popularity.
