Caring for your hands as the weather turns colder.

As the golden hues of autumn give way to winter’s crisp chill, we find ourselves reaching for scarves, woolly socks, and cosy cups of tea. But while we wrap up warm, there’s one part of us that often gets forgotten — our hands.
At Yorkshire Lavender, we know a thing or two about caring for skin that’s exposed to the elements. Between tending the lavender fields year round, through the elements, and bottling our natural lavender oil, we’ve learned how to keep hardworking hands soft, smooth, and comfortable all year round.
What irritates our hands in colder weather?
When temperatures drop, the air becomes drier — both outside and indoors once the heating’s on. This lack of moisture can leave our skin feeling tight, rough, or even cracked. Add to that:
Frequent hand washing and sanitising (still so important this time of year!)
Sudden changes between the cold outdoors and warm rooms
Wind exposure while walking the dog or working in the garden
And you’ve got the perfect recipe for dryness and irritation.
Simple ways to protect and nourish your hands
🧤 Pop on a pair of gloves
It might sound simple, but wearing gloves makes all the difference. A cosy pair of wool or fleece gloves protects skin from biting winds, while rubber gloves are a must for washing up or cleaning. Water and detergents can strip away the skin’s natural oils, leaving your hands more vulnerable.
💧 Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise
After washing your hands — and especially before bed — reach for a nourishing hand cream. Our Yorkshire Lavender Hand Cream is enriched with natural lavender oil, known for its soothing and healing properties. Massage a small amount into your hands and cuticles; the calming scent will help you unwind, too.
For an extra treat, try a mini spa moment: apply a thick layer before bed and slip on a pair of cotton gloves overnight. You’ll wake up to beautifully soft, lavender-scented hands.
☕ Stay hydrated from within
It’s easy to forget to drink enough water in winter, but hydration starts on the inside. Herbal teas, warm water with lemon, or simply keeping a glass nearby can help keep your skin supple and healthy.
🌿 Be gentle
Choose mild, moisturising soaps and avoid very hot water, which can dry the skin even further. Lukewarm water is best for washing hands — and your skin will thank you for it.
A Little Lavender Love
As the season changes, think of hand care as a little act of self-kindness — a few quiet moments just for you. Lavender has long been cherished for its ability to soothe both skin and soul, and we’re proud that every product we make carries the gentle fragrance of our Yorkshire fields.
So this winter, give your hands the same care you’d give your garden — protect, nourish, and tend them with love.
